Free family law clinic offered July 29 in Jackson June 23, 2022 A free family law clinic is scheduled for July 29, 9 a.m. to noon on the Third Floor of the Hinds County Chancery Court, 316 South President Street in Jackson. The Hinds County Chancery Court for many years has scheduled the free clinic shortly before the start of the fall school term to help grandparents and other family members obtain guardianships so that they can enroll children in school. “We are going to focus on guardianships to ensure that we can get the children in school,” said Senior Chancellor Denise Owens. Applicants must bring documentation such as a birth certificate, driver’s license, child support court orders and notices or letters from agencies such as the Department of Human Services. The clinic also will offer assistance with family law matters including uncontested irreconcilable differences divorce, custody, visitation, birth certificate corrections, name change and emancipation. Volunteer lawyers will provide legal assistance to people who can’t afford to hire an attorney. Participants must be residents of Hinds County and must be screened for eligibility based on income. The clinic is sponsored by the Hinds County Chancery Court, Jackson Public Schools, the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project, Mission First, the Capital Area Bar Association and the law firm of Forman Watkins and Krutz. The Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project and the Access to Justice Commission have scheduled free civil legal assistance clinics in other areas of the state. The free family law clinics are designed to give people enough basic legal advice and directions so that they can handle civil legal matters on their own in Chancery Court. Attorneys at the legal clinics will help clients prepare documents, give limited legal advice and help them get ready to go to court on their own.
